I want to be a firefigher. What's the process to enroll in the Academy?

This is a sterling question. We have developed an introduction page for the Firefighter Academy that explains the details. Applying for enrollment can be completed online.

Is a college degree required to enter the Academy?

No. The minimum educational qualification is a high school diploma or GED. We evaluate each candidate holistically, so if you have college credits, a degree, or similar credentialized training, our online application has fields for you to include this information.

Are there certain physical requirements for admission to the Firefighter Academy?

The short answer is yes - firefighters, obviously, must be prepared for any number of physically demanding and utterly urgent situations, which requires certain physical capabilities. As part of admission to the Academy, a physical evaluation by a physician will be part of the process.

Are background checks part of the process to be accepted into the Academy?

Yes. There are various requirements comprised of national organization professional parameters; various certification processes; and importantly, state legislative code, all of which set standards. We invite any potential Academy applicants to contact us if you have any questions. Concerns regarding a person's background will be discussed privately; past issues may not necessarily disqualify acceptance, depending on their nature.

Do I need to apply for the fire academy and the hazmat training individually?

No. Applying for the fire academy includes Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Hazardous Materials Operations curriculums. Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations are stand alone courses for remedial training purposes.

Can I use my VA Tuition Benefits?

Yes. Chapter 30 and Chapter 33 benefits can be used to attend a full Basic Structural Fire Academy course only. Individual Hazmat Courses and the EMT Course do not qualify.

Do the programs at Wolfforth Fire Academy lead to student certification?

All of our programs are strategically designed to give attendees the knowledge they need to embark on a professional career as a firefighter, EMT or HAZMAT Specialist. This includes adequate preparation to sit for state certification exams (in Texas, for example). The Academy cannot guarantee, of course, that any particular student will pass such exams, but statistically our students demonstrate a high rate of passing.

I have attended an academy in the past but let my certification expire or did not complete the certification process. Do I need to retake the entire course?

Each case is different, but generally an entire course retake is not required. Please contact us so that we can help you with your path to certification.

Is the Wolfforth Fire Academy certified?

Yes. The Wolfforth Fire Academy is officially recognized by the State of Texas as a certified firefighter training facility and program. In addition, all of our instructors are certified in their respective fields, and have had serious experience in the field.

What is the teaching and learning culture of the Wolfforth Fire Academy?

All of our instructors are professionals in their respective fields, and we believe strongly in providing the best programs available. Our difference is the quality and excellence in the instruction and training. This includes individual attention for each student, including professional mentoring as they proceed through the respective program. The environment is team oriented, professionally serious but friendly, and competency focused - with the immovable goal of preparing our students.

What is the Wolfforth Fire Academy's business structure? Is it for profit or non-profit?

The Wolfforth Fire Academy is a non-profit organization. We are governed by an additional non-profit supervisory organization, Lubbock Fire Educators, Inc.
